Reflecting on Our First Year – The Birth of a Business

Time flies when you’re having fun and I literally mean that. I find it hard to believe that it’s been a year since the birth of  my company. My baby is celebrating it’s first birthday!

It seems like it was only a few months ago when I was trying to come up with the perfect name and bouncing it off of my friends and confidants. I shared many iterations of names but I was sure I had made the right choice when I came up with The Social Buzz Lab. They all agreed!  I did hours of research, applied for and was approved by the SCC.  Next came the dubious task of  finding the right tagline. I had learned from my previous employer, Ira Kaufman, a master in marketing and branding, just how important a tag line is. I wanted to get it right the first time.  Honestly, it didn’t take long for the tag line to roll off of my tongue… We Build Buzz!  I immediately searched for the domain and voila, it was available!

Things were really moving fast now, company name, tagline and domain all coming together within a 48 hour period.

Have you ever met someone and immediately felt a bond?  I had to get my name out there, it was already the the end of January, so I went to a networking event, thanks to some coaxing by my friend Janeson Keeley, a true SEO expert.  Janeson introduced me to this beautiful young graphic designer and I knew immediately that we were meant to work together.  Erika Bentley was just starting her company also, Erika Design.  We met to discuss how we might help each other and it was like I would start explaining my thought and Erika would finish it!  She would show me a concept she was working on and I would offer my ideas and I could see the twinkle in her eyes.  We were definitely going to be a team!!  We began working on the logo. I told Erika that I didn’t want the buzz to come from a bee as what most people think of. I wanted a hummingbird!  I see a hummingbird as a very social bird.  They move their wings so fast that they create a buzz.  They have a giant network and travel thousands of miles a day.  She nailed the logo and we came up with a simple but effective web design and we were on the road to success!!

My baby has life!!  She is buzzing!!

Looking back on our first year I am so full of gratitude.  First I want to thank Ira Kaufman for all that he taught my during the 8 years we worked together.  He gave me an opportunity to learn and study this industry while he taught me the principles of marketing and branding and lots of lessons on business 101.  Without him I would not be doing something I love so much! A special thanks to John Lusher, who has been on much of the ride as a collaborative team member and friend. I also want to thank those first clients that put their trust in me in the beginning.  Thank you George Loving, my first paying client!!  I am so appreciative to Anne Clelland for her support and faith in me. It is because of Anne that I choose  my title “Social Media Practitioner”.  Finally, to all of The Social Buzz Lab clients, past and present, THANK YOU, we couldn’t have made it without you!

We look forward to 2012 and beyond as we continue to build buzz for our clients!
