Facebook

Currently on you can enable anybody to follow your personal Facebook profile, by switching your “Following” setting to public.

Facebook remove public followers

As Facebook explains:

“When you follow someone, you see their posts in your Feed. You automatically follow people you’re friends with. You can also follow the posts of people you’re interested in. You can also choose to allow people who aren’t your friends to see your posts in their Feed.”

So it’s a means for non-connections to stay up to date with your Facebook posts. Which is probably not necessary for non-creator or business accounts, so Meta’s decided to remove the option.

TikTok

A recent analysis by Pew Research Centers sheds light on the TikTok accounts favored by American users, revealing the platform’s landscape is dominated by:

  1. Internet-native content creators
  2. High-profile influencers
  3. Traditional celebrities

The study also uncovers a significant trend in user preferences:

Entertainment vs. News

TikTok users overwhelmingly follow accounts focused on:

  • Pop culture
  • Entertainment

These categories far outweigh accounts dedicated to:

  • News
  • Politics

This preference underscores TikTok’s primary role as an entertainment platform rather than a news source for its American user base

Are You Riding the Bluesky Wave?

The most recent figures show that the Bluesky social network continues to gain users. Currently at around 20 Million users total using the text-based app that is a direct competitor to X (formerly Twitter).

Since the recent U.S. Election, several high-profile individuals along with longtime X users have abandoned X and moved to Bluesky. So the question is; should you join the people moving to the X competitor?

The answer is the same as it is with every social platform and channel; it depends. If a text based/micro-blogging social network fits into your overall marketing and social media strategy, then building a presence on Bluesky may be beneficial. However, if you are joining Bluesky due to FOMO (fear of missing out), or because you see others doing it, those may be the wrong reasons to add yet another channel to your plate. Another point of consideration is this: if you want to join Bluesky to show X and Elon Musk that you’re unhappy with the X platform, that is the wrong reason or motivation to do so.

As you build your brand, or future build your businesses brand on digital media, you should evaluate and decide which platforms fit with your target audience, along with the platforms that support the type or types of content that you are comfortable creating. The choices of which social platforms that you should spend your time on can change as your goals change or as social media platforms change and evolve. It’s worth evaluating and reevaluating those choices on a regular basis.
